Broberg Retires From Training
The country's former leading trainer by wins will focus on breaking young horses.
Karl Broberg, who has saddled 4,900 winners in a 15-year career, has retired from training. Broberg made the announcement Aug. 9 via the social media platform X.
The conditioner wrote that his longtime assistant Abel Ramirez would take over the training operation while Broberg will instead turn his focus to "breaking babies" at his privately owned training center. Broberg acquired Toomey Training Center just outside of Vinton, La., in 2021.
Broberg noted that "there isn't a pending suspension" that is prompting his decision to retire from training.
An outspoken critic of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority, Broberg has mainly raced his horses in Louisiana and Texas over the past few years. He has trained the winners of 100 races in 2024 for earnings of $2,225,332 and captured his 13th training title at Delta Downs in February. Broberg also won his 12th owner's title at Delta Downs through End Zone Athletics, which he operates with Matt Johansen.
Broberg was the country's leading trainer by wins from 2014-19, saddling a career-high 548 winners in 2019. After becoming only the 13th trainer to ever reach the 4,000-win milestone in 2021, Broberg retires as the 10th-winningest trainer of all time.
